I plan to georeference all map sheets and present them on-line with an interactive interface, so that they may be explored in relation to the modern landscape.  Considering the scale of the project, and my current schedule, this may take some time!  If you have any suggestions or would like to help out, please contact me. I will try to show the map sheets aligned against a modern map for reference. If space permits, I will also put the georeferenced map sheets available on-line in GeoTIFF format.

Some of the map sheets are quite easy to reference to real-world coordinates, because they contain section corners or other fixed points of reference that still exist today. Others are quite difficult, particularly those that are under the waters of river impoundments. For these, I am stitching them together by edge-matching each sheet to those on either side of it, creating 'floating chains' of map sheets pegged at either end to the nearest well-referenced sheet. This is somewhat time-consuming. I am also looking for other pre-reservoir maps of the river to serve as bridging layers through time. If you know of any, I'd be happy to hear about them! For anyone interested, I am using the Idrisi Andes GIS package for this project (I use it for just about all of my GIS needs). Idrisi's new 'resample' module makes georeferencing much easier!
