Essay No. 1

Your assignment is to write an essay on this topic:
What is the theory of evolution and why is it important to anthropology?

Be specific in the paper and use examples from class discussions, readings, or the film.  Be sure to cite the assigned readings, but do not use lengthy quotations.  When you cite the readings in your essay, cite the author, date, and page number(s).  For example:

An aptation is "any useful feature of an organism, regardless of its origin" (Lavenda and Schultz 2008:36).

or:

According to Lavenda and Schultz (2008:36), an exaptation is any features of an organism that is currently useful, but evolved through natural selection for a different purpose.

Reference material that was brought up in class lectures as (class lecture):

In evolutionary terms, a "useful" feature is defined as one that leads to greater evolutionary fitness (class lecture).

Reference the movie as (Evolution, Disk 2).  You do not need a works cited page, unless you cite material not assigned for class.

The essays should be a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 3 pages in length.  Use 12-point font or smaller, double-spacing, and one-inch margins all around.  No weird fonts or colors, please.

Papers will receive an A if they are well-written with robust content and appropriate citations; a B if they have minor problems of content or writing; a C if they have minor problems with both content and writing; a D if they have serious problems with content or writing; and an F if they have serious problems with both content and writing.

Please take advantage of the Writing Center if you need help with your writing.  The essay is due in class on Wednesday, September 12.  This essay is worth a maximum of 5 points.  If it is not handed in on time, half of a point will be deducted for each day it is late.  Late papers may be handed in to the Department of Anthropology secretary Leah Wildhaber, Peck Hall 0212.
