Dot Neely created a seriation of gravestone types in this figure. The vertical axis is time - older on the bottom to newer on the top. The horizontal axis of each type represents frequency - the wider the line, the more examples of that type. Column- and tree-trunk-style gravestones were popular early on in this sample, between about 1870 and 1920, after which there are none. Tablets were popular early on too, but were mostly replaced by block-style gravestones. |
